OLD and NEW
TESTAMENT COMMENTARIES
by Cecil N. Sandifer
|
|
|
Cecil Nelson Sandifer was born in rural Simpson County,
Mississippi on November 12, 1921 into a family of vegetable
farmers. His interest in the Primitive Baptist Church grew
early in life and he joined in July of 1934. He graduated
with the class of 1939 from Crystal Springs Consolidated
School in Copiah County and soon moved to Jackson,
Mississippi. It was in Jackson that he was ordained
into the ministry by the Jackson Primitive Baptist Church
in May
of 1946.
|
Soon after moving to Jackson, he started work at Scanlon-Taylor
Millwork Company
where
he was employed as a draftsman until his retirement in March
of 1984. In March of 1944,
he married Clara Mae Griffin and they spent her remaining
lifetime raising four
children. After her death in 1982, he married Virginia Britt
and moved to Cleveland, Mississippi to
enjoy his retirement. After a minor car crash resulting
in Virginia having a stroke, however, he moved in with
his son, Alton near Nashville, Tennessee. He remained
there until
after Virginia's death
when he returned to rural Simpson County,
Mississippi where
he now resides with his daughter, Barbara. At
this time he has three surviving children, six
grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Throughout his life he has served as pastor to numerous
churches, and while at age 86 he considers himself to be too
"unreliable" to pastor a church, he is still
a frequent preacher and constant attendee. His
faith in God and belief in the church remain firm to this
day as is plain to see for all who know him. It is
difficult to say when he first felt moved to author a set of
biblical commentaries, but I am aware of some hand-written copies
dating as early as the mid 1960's. As he has only in the
past year or so completed the work, this makes his
commentary a work more than 45 years in the making.
While he lacks much formal education, few could claim
to have read and studied more in the Bible itself, or to
have spent more time, care, and prayer in the production of
a set of beliefs concerning it's meaning.

Before beginning
any comments on this book, or any other book of THE OLD TESTAMENT I
wish to say that I have no personal expertise in either the Hebrew,
or the Aramaic Language. Therefore, except for a word now and then
that I have discussed with some whose credentials concerning the
languages are acceptable, I can only consider the English
translation. When considering Hebrew or Aramaic words, I will
introduce my comments with, “I am told that this word means,” or
“these words mean”. This simply means that I have discussed this
word, or these words with some who do know the language.
